History

The history of Waubonsie Valley High School reaches back to the early 1970s. The school was built between 1973 and 1975 for about $9 million. It is one of three schools in the Indian Prairie School District 204.

Waubonsie Valley High opened for its first school year in 1975 with 293 students. Some seventh and 8th graders were also educated in the school for a short period. During the early years of the school’s operation, some construction delays prevented students from being able to use the gym and pool, but this was short-lived.

School Design

Waubonsie Valley High was designed to have an open campus with minimal walls separating the classrooms. This mode of operation lasted for a few decades, but eventually, room dividers were put in place to add more seclusion to each class. Later, more permanent walls were added to the structures. By today, several major construction projects have added additional features to the school’s design.

For example, there are additional classroom wings, an auditorium, and a fieldhouse in addition to the greenhouse, planetarium, and swimming pool. A child who attends this school would be surprised at the level of activities available on campus.

The music program at Waubonsie Valley is exceptional. They have won several Grammy Awards, and their list of sub-programs is extensive. For instance, students have the option to participate in seven different choirs, as well as a number of extracurricular ensembles. This includes two show choirs comprised of students from all age groups.
